Police Academy, previously known as Law Enforcement Training Centre, became a Registered Training Centre on March 16, 2006. From its establishment till now its prime objective remains as to provide the Basic Recruit Training for the uniform staff joining the Maldives Police Service.
By the end of year 2008, 18 Basic Recruit Training Courses have been successfully conducted whereby an average of 300 recruits took part in each of the batches. Since its establishment there has been a rapid increase in the number of in service courses designed and conducted for the personnel of the organization.
ACTING HEADS REVIEW
As Police Academy Is Established in order to Develop and Conduct Courses based on training need Analysis of Maldives Police Service, the Priority of the Academy is to ensure that whoever gets enrolled to the Academy's programs reach their targets by achieving objectives sets by Police Academy.
Police Academy's focus is to develop the key assets "Trainers" in relevant fields in order to train quality police officers by reaching and maintaining international best practices.
DEVELOPMENTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Police Academy has always made a very deliberate attempt on upgrading, updating and standardizing the kind of training inputs given to the participants.
Basic Recruit Training Course
In these attempts the Basic Recruit Training Course has always been given the highest priority in order to provide the very updated and modern training inputs of the ‘Best Practices' to the police officers of the organization.
The very close guidance and expertise of Western Australia Police is a highly contributing factor to these developments in the Basic Recruit Training Course.
At the end of year 2007 the Police Basic Recruit Training Course was approved by the Maldives Accreditation Board by (MAB) with the title, ‘Certificate II in Policing' and marked as the first of such courses designed by Maldives Police Service and recognized by MAB.
This MAB recognized certificate has been awarded to the successful participants of the subsequent 5 batches.
Meanwhile, the academy has done further modifications to this course in order to stretch it up to advanced level. This task has been now completed and the course has been approved by MAB as ‘Advance Certificate in Policing'.
The academy is currently preparing to commence the first batch of this newly approved advance certificate course for the recruits at the beginning of 2009.
Diploma in Policing
Police Academy is currently working on a project of designing a diploma level course which is targeted to be sent for approval of MAB by the end of November 2008.
Other Courses
Approving other courses that are designed and conducted by all other departments of the organization is formally incorporated into the mandate of the Police Academy recently.
The academy has developed necessary documents and guidelines in order to facilitate for course approval process and such advice is now available in the academy.
