Some important safety tips for kids

•    Make sure you know your full name, parent's names, and your address and phone number.
•    Tell your parents about things that happen to you that make you feel scared, uncomfortable or sad.
•    Learn the differences between a good secret and a bad secret. A good secret is fun to keep, like a surprise party. A bad secret feels bad to keep, and telling your parents about it doesn’t make you a “tattle tale.”

Strangers: A stranger is anyone you don’t know well.Safety tips for kids

Yell NO, Run and Tell: Yelling and running are better safety ideas than trying to hide. If a stranger approaches to you, you can YELL “No,” RUN to where there are safe adults, and TELL an adult.

Fight Back: It is okay to yell and fight; anything to get the stranger to let go. Yelling is the most important thing you can do, and to yell, “No!” “Help!” to get an adult’s attention.

Internet Safety: Never give your full name, address, or phone number to a person on the Internet, and that it is never safe to meet Internet friends in person without my parent’s supervision and consent.

•    Set up some online rules with mum and dad about what information you can give out and where you can go online.
•    Be open and honest with mum and dad about your Internet use. “ NO TELLING LIES ”
•    Be aware of who you are chatting with online - they may not be who they say they are.
•    Information that is on the Internet is NOT ALWAYS reliable.
•    Tell mum and dad if you see something that worries you – you will not be in trouble.
•    While chatting do not respond to someone if they say something inappropriate, immediately exit the site and let mum and dad know exactly what happened.
•    Set up your computer in the sitting room at home, where both mum and dad and other family members can see you.
•    Bookmark your favorite sites for easy access.
•    Block access to sites you think are inappropriate – speak to mum and dad about using filters so you are safe online.
•    Talk and share to mum and dad about your different online experiences, the good and the bad.
•    Let mum and dad know who you are chatting with.
•    Set up some rules with mum and dad about what information you should give out online.
•    Tell mum and dad if anyone says something online that makes you feel uncomfortable or scared.
•    Speak to your mum and dad about why you need to be safe online.
•    Limit your chat room visits and only be online for a short time.
•    Block access to chat room sites or pages that you think are inappropriate.
•    Let mum and dad see your chat log if they wish to see them.


Walking: When you walk down the street with your parents, always face traffic so that you can see if someone stops their vehicles near you. Tell your parents also not to take short cuts through alleys.

•    “Always walk across the road, never run.”
•    “Hold a grown-up’s hand when you cross the road.”
•    “Always go slow when you ride your bike.”
•    “Never tell anyone if you are home alone.”
•    “Always walk on the pavement.”
•    “Don’t talk to strangers.”
•    “Stop, look, listen and wait when crossing the road.”
•    “Always be seated while in the car.”
•    “Get in and out of the car on the side nearest to the road side.”
•    “Do not skateboard or rollerblade on the road.”
•    “Know what your full name, address and phone number is, in case you might get lost.”
•    “Never tell anyone on the phone that your mum and dad are not home”
