"Cyber Expo 2024" website launched

13 Nov

The official website for “Cyber Expo 2024,” an upcoming event jointly organized by the Maldives Police Service and the National Center for Information Technology (NCIT), was launched yesterday evening.

The Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihsan, launched the website at a ceremony held at the Iskandar Building.

The ceremony was attended by Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen, Chief of Defence Force Major General Ibrahim Hilmy, some executive officers of the MPS, and senior representatives from various government and private organizations.

In his speech at the ceremony, the Minister of Homeland Security and Technology stated that it is necessary to assess the current state of the Maldives' cyberspace. He mentioned that when this government took office, the level of cyber threats to various government agencies and occasional threats to private businesses still need to be evaluated, and that the entire cyberspace needs to be managed at a national level.

In his speech at the ceremony, Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau highlighted that "Cyber Expo 2024" will be a new encouragement for those working in the industry and relevant parties to meet in one place and strengthen relationships in a technologically advancing world. He also stated that looking at the current state of Maldivian society, the expansion of cybercrime offences needs to be stopped.

"In an increasingly digital world, when individuals fall victim to cybercrime, they suffer irreparable and costly losses. Therefore, it has become more important than ever to work together and cooperate to stop this. In this regard, it is essential to strengthen the relationship between private companies, government agencies, and educational institutions," the Commissioner said.

Additionally, the Commissioner called for establishing systems for sharing information, identifying cyber threats and digital security vulnerabilities, and working with the public to solve these issues. He also emphasized the importance of public and private sector collaboration to establish best practices and policies for creating a secure digital environment and setting goals for a safe cyberspace. The Commissioner also stated that the focus of Maldivians today should be on introducing and encouraging new professionals in this field, given the shortage of cyber security experts, and raising awareness about cyber security and all aspects of cybercrime.

"Protecting our young children and senior citizens from cybercrime. This includes familiarizing citizens with cybercrime laws and regulations. As a result, it will be easier to open up to international best practices and laws, and make appropriate changes to Maldivian laws," the Commissioner said.

Cyber Expo 2024 is scheduled for December 10 to 13 this year. This expo will be an excellent opportunity to view gadgets and services used for cyber security in one place and consult with technical experts in the field about common cyber attacks and potential preventive measures.
