Maldives Police Service Hosts Workshop on "Trauma in Policing"

17 Jul

The Maldives Police Service's  Workforce Health and Wellbeing, in collaboration with The Vibe, and Enlighten a Mindful Community, conducted a two-day workshop on "Trauma in Policing" from July 15–16. The workshop was designed for supervisory-level frontline officers and aimed to equip them with essential skills to cope with the psychological challenges of critical incidents they encounter in the line of duty.

The primary objective of the workshop was to enhance the officers' resilience and familiarize them with procedures for handling potentially distressing situations. Key topics covered included understanding trauma and stress, the specific traumas experienced by police officers, the consequences of unchecked trauma, and the impact of trauma on physical and mental health. Additionally, participants learned various coping strategies and self-care techniques.

An important aspect of the workshop was the inclusion of an Islamic perspective on mental health, which highlighted the relationship between faith and mental well-being.

The workshop featured facilitators such as Dr. Maumoon Shareef, Sheikh Ahmed Fahmy Didi, Villa College lecturer and psychologist Azra Abdul Sattar, and experts from The Vibe and Enlighten a Mindful Community. Their combined expertise provided participants with valuable insights and practical tools to manage the psychological demands of their profession effectively.

The Maldives Police Service remains committed to the well-being of its officers and continues to invest in initiatives that promote mental health and resilience within the force.
