Maldives Police Service Participates in EU-India Regional Conference on Combating Online Terrorism

21 Aug

Deputy Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen of the Maldives Police Service actively participated in the "Combating Terrorist Content Online, EU-India Regional Track 1.5 Conference" held in New Delhi on August 21-22. The conference, organized by the European Union in partnership with the Global Counter-Terrorism Council (GCTC) and India's Ministry of External Affairs, brought together key stakeholders from South Asia and Europe to address the pressing issue of online radicalization.

The two-day conference focused on current and emerging threats posed by the exploitation of online platforms by extremists and terrorists. It provided a forum for experts, policymakers, academia, and law enforcement officials from India, Bangladesh, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Europe to discuss strategies for combating digital extremism.

In his address, Deputy Commissioner Naveen emphasized the importance of regional collaboration in tackling the complex challenges posed by the intersection of technology and terrorism. He highlighted the Maldives' commitment to working with international partners to enhance counter-terrorism efforts, particularly in the digital sphere.

The conference is part of ongoing counterterrorism engagements under the EU's Indo-Pacific Strategy, which aims to strengthen partnerships with countries that share common security challenges. Participants explored strategies to counter violent extremism online and identified areas for collaboration between the EU, India, and the wider South Asian region.

The event also built on previous initiatives under the EU project Enhancing Security Cooperation In and With Asia (ESIWA), which has addressed various security challenges, including drone terrorism, cybersecurity, and the spread of misinformation and disinformation.

The Maldives Police Service continues to undertake robust measures at various levels to enhance its capabilities in countering terrorism and ensuring regional security and safety.
