Authorities Seize Sri Lankan Fishing Vessel with Narcotics Worth Approximately One Billion Rufiyaa
25 NovThe Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has intercepted a Sri Lankan fishing vessel illegally operating in Maldivian waters, seizing 468.6 kilograms of narcotics estimated to be worth nearly one billion Maldivian rufiyaa.
Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau, in a press briefing, revealed that the vessel named "Athenputha" was apprehended around 12:45 AM on November 23rd off the coast of Makunudhoo. The boat was subsequently escorted to Kulhudhuffushi City harbor.
According to Commissioner Shujau, a joint operation by the Kulhudhuffushi City Police and MNDF Coast Guard conducted a thorough search of the vessel on Sunday morning. The search yielded 468.6 kilograms of narcotics. Preliminary tests indicate that the seized substances include 344 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine and 124.6 kilograms of cocaine.
The Commissioner stated that the interception was the result of a successful coordinated operation based on intelligence received by the MNDF. He emphasized that this was a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies.
The vessel was crewed by five Sri Lankan male nationals. The Drug Enforcement of the Maldives Police Service, in conjunction with the Kulhudhuffushi City Police, is currently conducting an investigation into the matter.
